-
Developed a global enterprise-wide financial reporting
application using Applix TM1, arcPlan dynaSight,
Microsoft Excel, Visual Basic, and server command
scripts. Included gathering and analyzing business
requirements, creating high level architecture, modeling
data, designing dimensions, hierarchies, attributes and
cubes, creating cubes & cube rules, creating
TurboIntegrator (TI) programs to process data, writing
system documentation, training users.
-
Developed external and management financial reports,
replacing the reporting that had been done in the ERP
system. Reports included traffic lighting, flexible
filtering, menu-driven customization, and stored user
preferences. Reports that I developed included
income statement, balance sheet, variance to budget,
variance due to exchange, regional activity, as well
as process reporting for exception handling and
management of new metadata. Cut report generation time
from 45 minutes to less than one minute.
-
Created ETL (Extraction, Transformation & Loading)
processes in TM1 with TI processes performing business
rule mappings of relational data into dimensional model.
-
Developed another global TM1 application to gather and
consolidate data from 130 global business units in
support of the footnotes in the annual report. Added
new dimensions and cubes to existing environment. Also
implemented a custom workflow management system, wherein
submitters, reviewers and regional managers received
system-generated emails informing them about submissions,
rejections and approvals, with dynamically aggregated
global status indicators. This application cut the
headquarters quarterly process from six person-weeks to
less than two person-weeks, with greatly improved data
quality.
-
Co-developed curriculum and co-led user training on TM1
and the financial reporting application.
-
Performed TM1 server and client installations, and
version upgrades from 8.4.4 to 8.4.5, then to 9.0,
while migrating from 32-bit to 64-bit servers and
upgrading to a newer version of MS Server.
-
Upgraded arcPlan dynaSight servers from version 4.1.3 to
5.0. Converted existing reports.
-
Maintained servers, monitored performance, automated
TM1 Top processes to capture failure conditions,
resolved interruptions to production schedules,
communicated downtime notifications to user community.
Jan 2003 - Mar 2006
Investment Manager
Angel Inn Capital Management, Las Vegas, NV
-
Managed stock option investments for small group of
select clients. Selected and transacted individual
investments after considering technical analysis of
underlying company, fundamental analysis of general
stock market conditions, and understanding of client’s
objectives and risk tolerance.
-
Co-founded the corporation. Served as Director,
Treasurer and CFO.
Feb 2000 - Jan 2003
IT Engineer
Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, CA
-
Saved two weeks in an outsourcing project by inviting
participation from related functions (Risk Management,
Internal Audit, and Security) at an unusually early
phase of vendor selection process.
-
Supported, maintained and enhanced an application
called Options+, which was used to administer the
employee benefit of stock option grants. Modified the
system to support two large corporate acquisitions, one
large divestiture, revised SEC regulatory requirements,
and new grants with different business rules. This
application used a complex Oracle database with
OracleForms, triggers, stored procedures, PL/SQL scripts,
and interfaces to Visual Basic, various offline databases,
and various external reports. I used SQL and PL/SQL
scripts extensively to enhance the system for new
requirements.
-
Tested the Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) and discovered
errors which prevented restoration of the data warehouse.
Researched the issue, identified the problem, found the
solution, revised data center procedures, revised the
DRP, successfully re-tested the process, and passed
internal audit.
Nov 1997 - Feb 2000
IT Consultant
Hewlett-Packard Consulting, Cupertino, CA
-
Cut two full days from the monthly financial close cycle
by replacing four disconnected regional general ledger
systems with one global OnLine Analytical Processing
(OLAP) application. Provided seamless drill-down from
global consolidations to local journal entries, giving
the Controller his first direct access to the financials
of his business.
-
Closed the books on time every month, providing
24 x 7 support to international financial
analysts, while rolling out monthly phased releases of
new general ledger system.
Feb 1994 - Nov 1997
IT Solutions Specialist
Hewlett-Packard, Palo Alto, CA
-
Replaced HP’s global enterprise wide general ledger
data warehouse, within multi functional geographically
dispersed development team. Completed project on time
and on budget. Individually responsible for data
migration, reporting interfaces, maintenance procedures,
fiscal year end rollover processes. Met or exceeded all
requirements, including regulatory compliance with IRS
and SEC.
-
Saved HP $ 300,000 per year by gracefully decommissioning
the older general ledger system.
-
Recognized need for source code version control system.
Researched alternatives, proposed a solution, obtained
approval, implemented source code library, populated
library, trained colleagues on check out and check in
procedures. The team had lost multiple weeks of effort
due to version control issues; subsequent time loss was
prevented after the library was implemented.
Jul 1988 - Feb 1994
Senior Programmer Analyst
Hewlett-Packard, Palo Alto, CA
-
Recognized a pattern of frequent ad hoc requests by
network engineers for traffic and response time reports
on individual network links. Proposed a data warehouse
of pre-calculated Key Performance Indicators (KPI).
Led development of system. Slashed report generation
time from days to hours.
-
Hypothesized method to approximate end to end network
congestion by aggregating component links. Tested
theory. Created system to measure, calculate and
store values, providing near real time end to end
congestion reports. System was used until commercial
network vendors offered similar functionality.
-
Cut calling-card related intra-corporate billing
transactions by 25% and reduced administrative effort
by 50% by implementing a better administration
application. This allowed redeployment of two full-time
employees. I designed the overall system, specified
the data storage, individually constructed the user
interface, authored and delivered training curriculum
to off-site helpdesk staff.
RELEVANT VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE:
-
Consulted on architecture and data model, ran code
walkthroughs, created test plans, and performed test
cases on a networked client-server application that
allowed a world-wide church conference to carry 20,000
petitions through their legislative process.
Individually discovered several significant issues
early enough in the design effort to allow rapid
corrections. Enabled on-time delivery.
-
As a condominium owner, I asked the homeowner’s
association Board of Directors for clarity in the
annual reports regarding the reserves fund. During
that conversation, I volunteered to become the new
treasurer.
* I completely re-engineered the spreadsheet used to
estimate replacement costs, investment returns,
inflation, dues contributions & reserves fund balances
over a 30 year time horizon.
* I wrote a comprehensive letter that explained the
financial reports in more accessible terminology. Our
professional property manager (with my permission)
copied that letter to all of his other associations as
an example for their annual reports.
* I wrote an investment policy based on asset class
allocations, greatly reducing the time spent approving
periodic investment rollovers. I built consensus and
gained approval for the investment policy, and
implemented it with our investment managers.
* I orchestrated better cashflow management, enabling
us to prevent homeowner dues increases for four years.
